A visual index of counterfeits
Don't believe what you see.
All these items may look real, but they're actually counterfeits that have been confiscated by U.S. Customs and Border Protection at the Port of Los Angeles.
We've all heard of fake Louis Vuitton and Rolexes, but even simple everyday items like cigarettes and batteries are counterfeited.
In some cases, there's a lot of attention to detail. Counterfeiters have made the effort to create fake security features like holographic strips.
Even the counterfeit cigarettes pictured in slide #7 came in fake Marlboro-branded shipping boxes.
But in other cases, there are some entertaining mistakes that make these items even weirder.
A counterfeiter produced phony Duracell batteries with an Energizer-like bunny on the packaging. The fake Sony earbuds in slide #12 have a typo: "earphons."
The counterfeit items shown here are located at one of the Port of Los Angeles and Long Beach's three warehouses for inspecting incoming goods.
This one in Carson is 260,000 square feet and about 80 to 100 containers at a time are inspected here.
